This guy cleans house. He calmly addresses the most deep-seated protestant assumptions, one by one, and calmly, gracefully, lovingly pulverizes each one, by questioning its scriptural, historical, spiritual and logical implications, ten times over, from ten different angles, in ten different ways.

It has a very detailed table of contents so it's easy to flip over to random subjects without getting overwhelmed.

For any "old-school" protestant, especially in the more reformed persuasion, this book is a total rout. After reading this, you'll never go back to Calvin.

And even if you're a more "moderate" protestant, it's hard to read this book without asking if there's really more to this Catholic Church than you thought.

Never say die

Another vintage book that packs a punch and will get you thinking.

Published in 1918, William Barrett, the famed physicist, was also one of the originating founding members of the Society For Psychical Research in the 1880's.

The book is an examination of the evidence of life after death, and what proof we possess proving that we don't end when we die. It is also an examination on the small fraction of truth in Spiritualism. Meaning, while Spiritualism is a religion in itself, it is notorious for smoke and mirrors and parlor tricks...but somethings cannot be explained....

Mr. Barrett participated in seances in his own home, and accounts for seeing things he could not explain. He had a huge wood table that was levitated. Knocking sounds from everywhere and thunderous booms.

The book examines telepathy and spirit apparitions. It examines people who appear to other people when nearing death, but survive. It also covers haunting.

On a sad note, the book also tells stories of people's last words before dying. Such as a gentlemen speaking of seeing his spiritual family waiting to greet him as he passed...and he murmurs what he sees and talks to the spirits as he passes...

Eusapia Palladino was a famous controversial medium. She was investigated several times by the Society who caught her in fraudulent activity and in activity they couldn't explain. Mr. Barrett examines evidence for her and against the colorful, spitfire medium.

Automatic writing is also discussed in depth, and cross-writing, where one message was written by one person, only to be similarly written by someone else hours away. And how messages written by two different mediums were mysteriously pieced together years later to form an entire message. Chilling indeed!

Mr. Barrett's book draws from personal experience. He also uses excerpts and theories from "Phantasms Of The Living" , "Human Personality And It's Survival Of Bodily Death", and excerpts from the multitude of volumes of "Proceedings Of The Society For Psychical Research" and "Journal Of The Society For Psychical Research"

This book proves, in my opinion...never say die.

an early gay novel

The main and title character is the head and owner of a publishing house in New York City - and he's gay. However, I wouldn't classify this novel as stirctly gay fiction. There are heterosexual main characters and they are involved in a couple of subplots. The novel is interesting for two reasons: First of all, it explores the very close relationship between a gay man and his straight female best friend. The closeness of their relationship creates problems both for Sam's current partner and his female friend's husband. The book is also interesting because in spite of the early publishing date (1959), the protagonist is presented in a positive light. He loves his career, is intelligent and has a good sense of moral values and he wants a lasting relationship with another man rather than an empty promiscuous life. It is refreshing to see this in a book published in 1959. As far as the writing goes, it's not great literature, but still is an entertaining read.

Amazing!

Sam is a great story for any time. The fact that it was written back in 1959 makes it astounding. Having gay characters that weren't deviates, or living lives of shame (always ending in suicide, of course) just was not done. Then Sam came along and gave us a proud, likable, gay man. A hero we can cheer for!
The icing on this cake is that the book is full of great dialogue, interesting and fun characters, and a good plot. You'll want to read this!

snappy dialogue

A novel ahead of its time, it presents a short segment of time in the lives of several Manhattan characters with snappy dialogue. It also reflects the attitudes toward gay life some fifty or so years ago, both from the point of view of the protagonist, who is gay, and those around him, many of whom are not. Lonnie Coleman writes in a style that is succinct, pointed, but tellingly perceptive. He is better known for the Beulah Land series of novels, but this early novel is a gem.

It's a shame it's out of print

The first two pages are of Linda Bove showing the signs for the alphabet. Each page after that is based on a theme (for example: "In the morning" has pictures of Linda doing words like "Good, Morning, Alarm clock, window, comb, toothpaste, mirror..." followed by another page with drawings of Sesame street characters and settings with each of those signs in it and something along the line of "How many things in this picture can you sign?" (with all of those things in it).
The themes are "In the morning", "The family", "School days", "Colors", "on the farm", "playground fun", "Opposites", "Action words", "People in the neighborhood", "Spring", "Summer", "autumn", "Winter", "Utensils and food", "In the woods", "How people get around", "In the Jungle", "The way you feel", and "Nighttime". The final two pages of the book are dedicated to signing the numbers 1-10.
It is a fantastic book and I hope they decide to start printing it again so my friends can stop looking for discarded library copies. ;)

My kindergartener has been learning a few signs at school and I remembered this book from my childhood and wished I still had mine. I'm glad I can find a used copy. As a kid of 7 or 8 I taught myself the alphabet and a few other signs. I never had an opportunity to use the signs myself (except when spelling out words in front of my children like 'candy' or 'movie'!) I look forward to sharing this book with my son, and I also wish they would make a new printing.

LOVED THIS BOOK !

Rochelle French has me completely hooked on her Meadowview Heat series. TRUSTING THE ONE is the second book in this series, and I loved it as much as I loved the FOREVER THE ONE! This author is now on my auto-buy list--she writes amazingly strong, complex, and passionate characters who face heart-wrenching situations, but there's still plenty of fun mixed in with the deep emotion. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Horace Dunbar. After his latest ill-considered remark, longtime family friend Miss Iona calls Ida and asks that she return home to Georgia to check on her father. Meanwhile, Wes Harper, the son of the Rev's closest confidante, returns, but for a different purpose: a Republican operative, he's been tasked with securing the Rev's voter database in order to purge the voting rolls. The author paints those associated with Ida and her father with a broad, loving, brush, while Wes and the Republicans are predictably and cartoonishly villainous. I CAN WAIT!

It has been one month since the election of President Barack Obama and Ida B. Wells Dunbar is still waiting for a job offer. She was convinced that by now she would have heard something. Particularly, since she has devoted the past 18 months of her life to helping to get him elected. Ida B. has even gone so far as to tell her father, the Reverend Doctor Paul Dunbar, that she has a job and he has told all of West End Atlanta. To make matters worse it seems that Reverend Dunbar is losing his grip. He has said publicly things about the new administration and other races that has made all who know him squirm and question his sanity. So, when long time family friend, Miss Iona, calls Ida B. and tells her to return home she is not ready, partly because she and her father are not in agreement about the new president and because the whole city thinks she is part of the new administration. However, family is most important and Ida B. must return home at least temporarily. Till You Hear from Me by Pearl Cleage tells the story of what happens when the prodigal daughter returns home and nothing is quite what it seems.

I read Till You Hear from Me by Pearl Cleage in one sItting and enjoyed every word. Ms. Cleage takes us into the world of current politics and mixes it with the way the Old Guard considers the New Negro. There were so many laugh-out loud moments and many others that made this baby-boomer say, `Oh yes.' One interesting component was how the author wrote about what she coined,
The Post Racial Blacks', the group of well-educated African-Americans who feel removed from the civil rights struggle. It will give the reader much to consider. I recommend Till You Hear from Me to every reader who enjoys a well-told story with bits of politics, urban-renewal and old-school common sense.

I have read other works by the great author Pearl Cleage, Till You Hear From Me is now my favorite. I loved the presence of real people in the novel. I admired the knowledge of the elders,their gentle firmness. Would like to have a continuation, so I can see how Ida's job in Washington in the Obama adminstration works out. I loved this book!!!!

Different Road, Same Destination

Only child to a stern, know-it-all, old-school civil rights pastor emeritus, and an ultra-feminist mother, Ida B. Wells Dunbar finds her way, and herself, in this tale of old school vs. new school, family and politics.

Post-Obama campaign, Ida hopes to land a position working in the White House, especially after she and her father have worked so hard to help President Obama become elected. The challenge begins when the parent and child dynamic is rocked for differences of opinion, casual outbursts, media frenzy and people with alternative motives.

I particularly enjoyed the way Ms. Cleage wove themes of traditional and new ideologies, politics, community and family into this story. Some of the issues I found myself pondering while reading this selection were the emotional struggles an aging generation may face in passing responsibilities to a younger generation, and acceptance of new technologies and ways of doing things; the level to which some will go for the almighty dollar - greed; and, the importance of not only family, but the well-being of the community and the nation as a whole.

The characters in the story made it even more interesting. I found one of the characters, Miss Ionia, to be very direct, and she even made me laugh a few times. She was my favorite. I read this selection in 2 days, wanting to know what happened next and to finally get to the bottom of the mystery. I recommend this selection and will definitely consider other titles authored by Ms. Cleage.
