Over the years I've become frustrated at the lack of clear information about building projects that utilize propane. �Few fuels are safer to work with when handled correctly. �But few sources of information explain how to do so. �In the course of teaching myself how to build flame effects, foundry burners and other propane based fire projects, I decided that I needed to share what I'd learned with other makers.

Make:Fire combines an introduction to and reference for working with propane and then puts that knowledge to work in a series of projects. �Each project builds on the skills learned in its predecessors so that you can start out with no experience and learn as you go. �I've always been very frustrated with project books that leave out critical information or assume you have special knowledge. �I've tried to write this book clearly, completely and in a way that is open to beginner as well as experienced makers.
Fire art is exciting, but the real dangers are in ignorance. �Make:Fire is my attempt to make these types of projects safer and more accessible to interested artists and makers.

About the Author

Tim Deagan has written for Make: magazine, Nuts and Volts, and other technical publications. He is a licensed Texas Flame Effects Operator and the Flame and Safety Coordinator for the Austin Mini Maker Faire. After years of building flame effects, aka "booshes," in the local Burn community, Tim began teaching classes called "Propane 101" and "Build Your Own Aluminum Foundry" to help other interested makers create their own projects. As a former firefighter in the Brent Volunteer Fire Department and captain of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team, Tim has always believed that the most exciting pursuits are at their best when safety is fully understood and becomes part of the culture. Tim is also a contributor to the open-source 3D CAD program OpenSCAD and an active member of the Handibot CNC and Printrbot 3D printer communities.

Great book!

I wanted to make a propane-powered flame thing for an event like Burning Man. I'm an experienced maker, and have closely examined other propane flame effects, so I thought I knew what to do. But... it could be dangerous for someone with no experience.

This book filled my need perfectly. It goes through some example projects in great detail. It also explains enough of the theory and general principles so it's clear *why* things should be done the way they are. I'm going to build one or two projects from the book to gain experience, then do my own.

The book is clear, very well written, and fun to read. I highly recommend it.

Jump Start for Foundry Burner Construction

I'm a noobie with hopes of being a hobby metal caster. So far, I've just been accumulating information and materials.

The author is very safety oriented, and does a good job of identifying fittings and components are suitable to use with propane. Several chapters are about building fire effects. Even so, I found chapter 2 (Equipment and Parts) and chapter 8 (Venturi Burner - a Ron Reil burner) to be very helpful.

Great background on how to work with and properly handle Propane. Safety First! Gives the reader all the background and science needed to design very fun propane projects safely. I real enjoyed the detail given to all the parts and assembly tips to make sure you do it right.
Wish I had this reference when i started and glad i have in my library now.

Sergei L. Loiko, a Los Angeles Times correspondent and photographer for 24 years, has covered wars, crises and daily life in Russia and the former Soviet states for the Los Angeles Times since 1991. He reported from northern Afghanistan in 2001 and from Iraq in 2003. In 2005, he contributed to then-Moscow Bureau Chief Kim Murphy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning reports. His book, “Shock and Awe, War in Iraq,” published in Russian in 2004, was a regional best-seller. Before joining the Times, he was a television producer, a sergeant in the Strategic Rocket Forces and an English language high school teacher. powerful, compassionate piece of writing

“Airport� is a novel based on a true story of the heroic and dramatic 242-day defense of Donetsk airport by ragtag Ukrainian troops heavily outnumbered and outgunned by pro-Russia separatists and regular Russian troops which invaded eastern Ukraine in the summer of 2014.
In between graphically chilling accounts of the airport siege saga, the author leads us through the entire history of Ukraine's 2013-2015 popular revolution against the corrupt Moscow-backed regime in Kiev and the armed confrontation that ensued between mainly inexperienced volunteer Ukrainian troops and the mighty invading force of Russian mercenaries, local rebels and Russian army units.
The novel is not only and not so much about the stunningly outrageous war that should have never happened and was thought by many as impossible. It is also about human experience: love and hatred, betrayal and loyalty, passion and submission, courage and cowardice, and a whole range of human emotions and behavior in tests and trials.
The novel consists of chapters centered on one particular character and his or her story of war. The main character, Alexey, who ties the chapters together, witnesses all these stories and experiences. Alexey is an American photographer of Russian descent covering the war in Donbass for a major U.S. daily newspaper on both sides of the front line. At the same time, he experiences a devastating personal tragedy that leaves him in shatters. It also casts for him a totally new view of his personal role in the bloody conflict, pushing him to an unlikely option that leads to a surprisingly dramatic climax.
The author’s compassionate and richly detailed writing gives the reader a vivid, truthful and moving picture from the inside of the most recent and, as of December 2015, still continuing war in Europe.

“Aeroport” is the latest release from the acclaimed war correspondent and author Sergey Loiko. The title refers to the bloody battle in the Donetsk Airport in Easter Ukraine where the local rebels tried to fend off the invading pro-Russian forces. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been much forgotten and eclipsed by other recent developments in the world, but it still rages on nonetheless. Mr.Loiko has documented the wars in Afghanistan in Iraq, and has now spent four days in the Donetsk Airport documenting that battle. His immersive narrative will throw the reader right in the heart of combat; to the sounds of missile and bullet strikes, agonizing moans of wounded soldiers, weeps of grieving mothers, the smell of burning flesh in destroyed vehicles, and other graphic horrors of this forgotten and ignored war. At long last, the much awaited and anticipated depiction is here.

Know the laws of body language and influence. Got a better understanding!

If you want to be an influencer then this book will be a perfect choice to read because it fully loaded with plenty of information, helpful guidelines and key concepts. I had a huge interest to learn more about how to analyze other people and for that why I had read various guidebooks as well but I was not satisfied.

Suddenly, I heard about this book from my cousin and after hearing from him I didn’t forget to grab & read it. These two books didn’t disappoint me, rather I have learned lots of effective techniques for here. After reading and knowing all these body language laws, not it is all most clear to me about how to analyze the other person's mind. If you want to learn the true meaning of influence and human psychology, then read this book entirely and it is my honest suggestion.

A wonderful read with lots of inside tips on understanding the non-verbal communications of others. I re-read certain parts of the book make sure the content becomes a part of my daily database of information when dealing with people. I highly recommend the book, especially to those who work in a business environment. It's true body language is the first and most honest language of all.

This book gives simple and clear review of psychological models to analyse human behavior. Brian did not only provide useful everyday tips and to techniques for analyzing people, he also provides a useful guide to self-analysis. It helped me understand a little bit more about about what drives people and why they have certain personalities. I will certainly be applying what I have learnt.

When people ask me how I became interested in succulents, I tell them I toured an amazing succulent garden on assignment for the San Diego Union-Tribune. Horticulturist Patrick Anderson and his aloe garden opened my eyes to the beauty of succulents and their potential in garden design.
����������� Yet even as I say this, around the edges of my awareness floats a much earlier memory. I was eight or nine years old when I went with my mother to a home in a wealthy community for an occasion I don't remember. When we returned home, my mother described the house to my father: "Big picture windows, but imagine having to clean them. Views of the golf course, but the property is too steep. Surrounded by trees, but they shed leaves and bark. Big deck off the living room, but no garden."
����������� No garden? There had been an astonishing one, in pots on the deck, with plants unlike any I'd seen before. They looked like eels, starfish, and coral. One was a perfect little sphere with a green-and-maroon herringbone pattern. Others were necklaces of blue-gray buttons, rubbery silver-blue roses, and sticks of green chalk with windowed tips.
����������� My mother concluded wistfully, "Maybe someday Debbie will have a house like that."
����������� Why would I want it, I wondered, if it came with dirty windows, messy trees, and near-vertical land? On the other hand, who wouldn't want that deck garden? It became something I longed for, along with a saltwater aquarium, a hot air balloon, and an unlimited supply of chocolate marshmallows.
����������� I no longer want any of those, but succulents continue to seduce me. I'm that little girl again when I see a succulent I haven't seen before, or even a well-grown one I may have seen dozens of times. You might assume I have a vast collection, and although I do own dozens of varieties, I don't consider myself a collector. Fascination need not be possession. I'm equally happy looking at succulents in a nursery, at a show, or in someone else's garden. In particular, I enjoy capturing and recording succulents' myriad shapes and textures with my camera.
����������� For most of my career, I've written about all sorts of plants. Words are still my first love, but nothing describes a plant or a garden as well as a photo. As I practice this art form, I often think of how "photography" means "writing with light." Camera in hand, I circle a succulent, looking for the best light. In slanted early morning or late afternoon sun, red margins burn neon bright, spines incandesce, fuzzy filaments shimmer, and leaves reveal glowing hues of rose, orange, purple, and blue. As you might imagine, it was difficult to winnow the selection of photos for my books. So many have merit, or illustrate an important point, and I was continually thinking, "But I have to show them this one!"

The book I've been waiting for: gorgeous DIY, covered in photos, lots of easy tips and bullet points

If you've been around the world of horticulture for any time, you're probably familiar with Debra Lee Baldwin's work with succulents. Her first two books, Designing with Succulents and Succulent Container Gardens, are still the most thoughtful, in-depth guides to those topics available. However, both of those books have so much information that you could say they are aimed more towards a deeply passionate hobbyist or a professional like myself, rather than the casual gardener.

In certain situations, I think it can be even more helpful to have a simpler reference which condenses the most actionable information available into one easy-to-use guide. That's where Debra's new book, Succulents Simplified, comes in.

She goes over everything from creating designs using the varied shapes, colors and textures of succulents, choosing the right location so they'll succeed, and the right way of maintaining these plants so they continue looking fresh. The information is presented in a clean, easy-to-peruse format with a lot of bullet points and lists making it easy to find the information you're looking for.

Then, the second section has eight gorgeous DIY projects to get you more enthused and involved in the succulent world, with each section having multiple pages of detailed how-to photos and instructions. Want to grow succulents in a low light situation? Create one of those living picture vertical gardens you keep seeing in the magazines? What about a succulent-topped pumpkin to sit by your front door as autumn decor? She even goes into how to make succulent bouquets for special occasions, such as a wedding. What I love best about this section is that Debra gives us the tools to create our own projects from her instructions - not only is there endless variety in terms of which succulents you choose, but each project has huge potential for you to personalize it and make it your own in other ways.

Though the first two sections are the most immediately exciting, I suspect the third section, 100 Easy-Care Succulents, will actually get the most use from me after I learn from the first section and do a few of the projects in the second. I confess that when I go to the nursery, I feel a hint of trepidation when I try to choose which succulents to use in my container planting projects.

Debra demystifies the hardiness, habits, and best uses for each of the 100 succulents featured. This is exactly what I have needed all these years - a pictorial guide to some of the most common and useful succulents out there. With Debra's help, I feel like I'm finally learning to identify and understand Kalanchoes, Graptoverias and the rest. The only thing that could be better is if Debra would also release an app that I could take along with me to the garden center!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the quality of the photographs in this book. Debra Lee Baldwin isn't just a writer; she's a noted photojournalist and took many of the pictures for this book herself. One of my main complaints about many recent releases in the horticultural book world is that the photos and the writing often don't seem to go together as smoothly as they could. Either the photographs are close-ups of plants and don't fully illustrate the design tips, or the pictures don't have a consistent style throughout the book. Because of Debra's skill at both writing and photography, her book is a shining example of all that print publishing can and should be doing to ensure that photos and text work seamlessly to enhance one another and the aims of the book. The book is packed full of photos, with multiple pictures illustrating each point or plant. I can't say enough about what a difference this makes to my enjoyment of the text.

Succulents Simplified is being marketed as a prequel to her other books, and I think that's completely accurate. I adore the in-depth information in her other two books and refer to them frequently, but I think the ease-of-use, inspirational photos and DIY projects, and the simple reference guide to the most common and noteworthy succulents is going to make this my favorite of the three to recommend people start with, because it has a little bit of everything you need, no matter how deep your interest in succulents.

One of the best succulent books in my collection

Succulents Simplified covers all aspects of succulent gardening, whether you grow them outdoors, in containers or use them for crafting projects. Despite the fact that I have been doing all of these things with succulents for the last four years, I often feel like I'm just winging it. This book is now my go-to source for caring for my existing collection as well as for choosing new varieties. The book goes well beyond listing solid, easy-care succulents choices (although it does that as well), and includes a range of essential information, such as how to refresh succulents in containers, companion plants, and a terrific "what's wrong with my succulent" Q and A. The format features breakout boxes, checklists, and detailed how-to photographs, making it easy for me to find answers to specific questions, or page through for design inspiration or a craft project to try. The format is particularly user-friendly. Any succulent lover will appreciate the wealth of information provided, but beginner and intermediate succulent gardeners will find it particularly helpful.

Best Entry Level Book on Succulent Gardening Available

Debra Lee Baldwin has hit a homerun again for succulent gardening. This time, Debra is targeting those really new to succulents and this book helps take the mystery out of learning how to garden successfully with succulents. Gorgeous photos, excellent descriptions and instructions. This is a wonderful complement to Debra's other two succulent books, "Succulent Container Gardens: Design Eye-Catching Displays with 350 Easy-Care Plants" and "Designing with Succulents", both previous books considered the top succulent gardening resource books on the market today. My books from Debra Lee Baldwin have earned a spot next to the "Sunset Western Garden Book" as my top 10 most valuable gardening resource books in my gardening library. This book will be one of my "go to" succulent books. Well done, Debra, another fantastic book. Will be on my holiday gift list to my fellow gardening friends and family!

Here's what you learn

A lot of people try to state that they learned a lot or a little, but not what they actaully learned. I just finished this course, here's a quick rundown of the contents:

*Present tense of quite a few verbs, including those for shopping, saying where you are going and staying, eating and drinking, where things are or aren't, what you want and don't want, what you can and can't do, and who you are doing things with. You learn them in present tense, a very simple form of the future tense, and they introduce the past tense in the second to last lesson. Asking questions is emphasised in this course, you do it almost as much as you answer them.

*You learn few nouns other than those needed to use the verbs; it feels like they made a point to not include a lot of nouns. You will learn the words for your immediate family, beer/wine/sake and some other random nouns like "hat". This is the biggest drawback to the program, but it is easily overcome by a good set of vocab lists.

*Also, very few adjectives. Big, small, expensive, fast, far away are among the few. You learn how to say "too" fast/expensive. But you learn how to use them very well, so it would be easy to add more with the aid of a dictionary.

*You spend a lot of time talking about money. How much you have, how much you need, vocab for currency exchanges and shopping. You also learn the numbers 1 to 199. And, weirdly enough, you learn how to ask people for money.

*You learn how to talk about your car, including how to ask for gas and how to give and take directions.

*In the last couple lessons, you learn how to ask what words mean in English and how to say words in Japanese.

*You learn how to talk about time and tell time. How long you've been somewhere and how long you plan on staying, and you do it in days, hours, and weeks. Also, you learn the words for yesterday, today, tomorrow, and morning, night.

*"You learn how to ask why and answer "It's because..."

Overall, the vocabulary is extremely polite, I don't imagine this is the way good friends talk to each other. I have already done the second course in Russian, and they introduce more informal vocab in the second series. (I have done the first series in Russian, German, and Japanese, and the things you learn are the same each lesson in each language.)

Even if the subjects are a little touristy, you are still learning how to use verbs and particles much quicker than with other courses. Once you get the structure of the language down, it's relatively easy to add the vocab for what you want to talk about.

Overall, this is a *huge* amount of information to pack into thirty lessons. I also recommend either pausing so you have time to answer, rewinding so that you can catch something you got wrong and/or listening to the more difficult lessons twice.

I hope this is helpful, this is what I was looking for when I read the reviews, and was surprised no one had done this.

I think the speakers are native Japanese.

I'm a Japanese, have listened to Pimsleur courses in English, which I found very interesting and useful. I have listened only to sample tracks of the Japanese course and I am not here to evaluate it, the 4 stars above are dummy. However, since someone suspected that the female speaker may not be Japanese native, I'd like to write my impressions here.

Well, the woman's voice sounds a little bit peculiar indeed, but it does not sound accented as Chinese or any foreigner. I think her intonation is too flat even by Japanese standards and each word is a bit too strongly articulated, which reminds me of Japanese old-fashioned voices of radio announcers we sometimes hear in historical recordings.

So don't worry, friends. The pronunciation is passable after all. The mode of intonation in Japanese differs greatly by dialects, genders, and generations. In particular, the difference between manly and womanly intonation may be very important, tremendously so in certain situations, but too subtle to learn easily. For this matter, the (too) neutral intonation of the woman's voice, sounding a bit like electronically synthesized one though, may be rather not so bad to avoid unnessesary misunderstandings. I mean, you can safely speak like her regardless of your gender.

Less Successful Than for European Languages

I have gone through the complete Pimsleur series for several European languages --- Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, and Greek (only Level 1 available). I have supplemented these with the Ultimate Italian, Portuguese, etc. material (book only, not the CD) from Living Language because I want a more systematic presentation of the grammar than Pimsleur gives. Also Just Listen 'N Learn from Passport Books (now McGraw Hill) and the Take Off In series from Oxford University Press, in order to expand my vocabulary. I go through each Pimsleur lesson at least twice the first time through, with lots of use of the pause button and backspace button on my player. And when when I've finished one level, I go back to the beginning and listen to it all over again. With this preparation, I was able to travel in Greece and Italy and briefly in Portugal (which of course required a readjustment from the Brazilian form of the language) and even have friendly conversations with some people who spoke little or no English.

But the Pimsleur method doesn't work as well for Japanese as it does for European languages. You will certainly learn a lot of Japanese, but you won't speak Japanese.

This is a review for all three levels of the Pimsleur Japanese. The Pimsleur materials provide a good starting point. I would never try to learn any language without starting with Pimsleur. (I haven't tried Rosetta Stone. I did eventually get the Linguaphone series for Japanese, which is forty years old and completely dreadful.)

There are two big problems with the Pimsleur approach to Japanese: vocabulary and grammar. Five hundred words just doesn't take you as far in Japanese as it does in European languages. For instance, in European languages you learn the words for family members down to nieces, nephews, and cousins. In Japanese, you learn only husband, wife, son, and daughter. (No, not even father and mother.) The difficulty is that there are separate words for older brother/sister and younger brother/sister. Furthermore, the words you use for talking about your own family (to outsiders) are different from the ones you use for talking about someone else's family. In some cases this difference is minor, but in other cases totally different words are used.

As far as grammar goes, at first it seems like Japanese grammar is very simple. Unlike Russian or German, nouns are not declined. For most nouns, the plural form is identical to the singular. First and second person pronouns (I, you) are most often omitted. Verbs have no conjugation by person: whether the subject is I, you, we, he, she, they, the verb form doesn't change at all. All verbs apparently end in "mas" (usually "imas," sometimes "emas"). To make a verb negative, you just add "sen" at the end. And there are in principle only two tenses, often called the past and the non-past (present and future). (Actually, there is a sort of separate future sense used when one is not absolutely certain about the statement one makes about the future. This is the "desho" form of the verb. It's a little like the distinction in English between "Tomorrow I go to New York" and "Tomorrow it will rain.") The verb system is extremely systematic. Most textbooks say that there are only three irregular verbs (to come, to do, and to be), although a handful of other verbs have slight irregularities in certain forms. You can buy a book called 501 Japanese Verbs, but I don't know quite why anyone would feel the need for it, except to learn the vocabulary.

But in fact the verb system is quite difficult, because there are an incredible number of endings. For instance, there is no word for "if" in Japanese; instead, there's a conditional form of the verb. And when you say, "I want to eat," there's no verb for "I want"; instead, you use the "desirative" form of "eat." And when you say, "Harry wants to eat," it's a completely different verb form. Consequently, the Pimsleur Japanese doesn't cover nearly as many grammar points in Japanese as it does with European languages. For instance, the passive voice isn't taught at all. Relative clauses ("the man who was here yesterday") are not covered at all. They are very simple in Japanese, but very confusing for someone who speaks English.

Pimsleur is based on two principles that just don't work as well for Japanese as for European languages. First, there is no systematic presentation of the grammar. One learns grammar by learning model sentences. And second, one learns only sentences that one would actually use in a business or touristic context, rather than contrived sentences such as "The pen of my aunt is on the table."

One consequence is that everything one learns is in the mode of formal speech (in contrast to "plain" speech). Formal speech is in fact the only way you will ever speak in Japan, unless you acquire a Japanese lover or very good friend. The problem is though that in the first place, the whole Japanese verb system is based on the plain (informal) mode, so it's hard to learn if you start with the formal form of verbs. (This is the form that ends in "mas.") Secondly, even in completely formal speech you need to very frequently use the informal form of verbs whenever a sentence contains more than one clause. In fact, these Pimsleur sentences contain lots of verbs in the informal mode. And this is very confusing since it's much easier to derive the formal form from the informal than vice-versa, so you frequently wind up thinking, "Where the hell did that verb come from?" Second, when used in a sentence, the informal form of the verb is usually wrapped up in a package of little particles and other words, all of which sounds like one very long word. So it's very difficult to learn the verb itself. To a large extent these extra little additions are softeners, to make sure that what one says doesn't come out as overly confrontational. It's as if one says in English, "The thing is, you know, I would sort of, like, prefer to go another day." As I say, this mostly comes out as one long word.

So start with Pimsleur, yes. But you're going to need to follow up with lots more books and tape sets (the iPod Japanese series, JapanesePod101.com, is very good, and a lot of fun) and probably some real live courses before you have any useful knowledge of Japanese. (I'm still in the beginning stages myself, and not sure to what extent I really want to continue with Japanese.)
