About the Author

Matthew Parker was born in Central America and spent part of his childhood in the West Indies, acquiring a lifelong fascination with the history of the region. He is the author of Panama Fever, the story of the building of the Panama Canal, and Monte Cassino: The Hardest Fought Battle of World War II. He lives in London. good history on a disreputable trade

This is a well written history book. It covers the sugar trade and the families that ran it. Its far from a happy story in many respects. But its very illuminating on issues of business, trade, politics and the stories of individuals. The early parts of the book jump all over the place leading to a rather choppy narrative, but the story told is always interesting (if not exactly happy).

The sugar trade was empire in its pureist and most ruthless form. It killed most of those who became directly involved in the west indies (slave, soldier, businessmen). And the wealth all went back overseas to the ultimate owners who ran the whole thing on something like remote control. The book's ending seems rather abrupt and the author could have gone further in terms of looking at the history. But all in all a very good book.

Used it in my US History class

This was a valuable addition to my undergrad Honors US History syllabus this semester. The students were not aware that English colonial success in the Atlantic really began in Barbados, or that New England and the West Indies were so important to each other's growth as early as the 1640s. A couple of things surprised me, though. First, I thought they would understand that the conflicted way we tend to look at these sugar barons (partly as self-made heroes of a rags-to-riches romance, partly as monsters who enriched themselves on slave labor) is a problem that's endemic in history. I'll need to spell it out a little more, next time. But I think Parker presented it well, especially in the self-contradictory memoirs of Richard Ligon.

The other difficulty, which I think Parker contributed to, surrounds slavery. For the most part, the students accepted Parker's claim that racialized slavery was the fault of medieval Muslims. This is unfortunate. Generally, before the modern era, slavery was not so much based on rationalizations of inferiority, as on conquest. Conquered people became slaves, often in spite of the fact that they shared the ethnicity of their conquerors. My students will see another example of the racialization of slavery when we take up Virginia next week. With so many examples from the Anglo-Atlantic world, there's no reason to go looking in 8th-century Islam.

Despite this complaint, I like the narrative style and the focus Parker throws on this time and region, which too often gets only a paragraph in textbooks. Connecting the Caribbean with the mainland (especially New England) is really helpful, and shows the early colonial period in a whole different light. This will be very useful, when we get around to discussing the way historians have fought over the "market transition" and early "capitalism" in the colonies and young nation.

An eye-opener of a book

Parker opened my eyes to the predominance of the sugar trade in the seventeenth century and beyond, the close relationship particulary between Barbados (and the English caribbean in general) with the thirteen North American colonies. He also gives another perspective on the slave trade. What I really enjoy about Mathew Parker's style is his ingenious way of getting you hooked with one or two personal stories of individuals and families; And once he has you, the process of historical extrapolation becomes much more readable. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the caribbean islands.

Too simplistic for adult coloring book, but good for idea production with other artwork

Comparing this to other coloring books - a definte 2 or 3. If it would be placed in the clip art section, I might give it a stronger 3 or 4. To get the images detailed enough, in my opinion, I would have to add decorative patterns in areas where none are offered. The cover image shows one of the FEW masks with significant detail. Wish I didn't buy it for I have a clip art book that is far superior to this booklet.

Elementary Teacher

I looked and looked for a book to assist in helping teach Native American culture to my students. Finding it difficult to find hands on materials for elementary level students I turned to Amazon for help. Thankfully, I was rewarded with this book Native American Masks. It is a coloring book and my students loved it. It was an excellent change of pace activity to accompany my writing and reading materials.

About the Author
Professor Ruzhu Wang has been Director of the Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University since 1993 and is a leading scientist in the area of adsorption refrigeration research and solar cooling. In recent years he has also had a deep involvement in green building energy systems. Prof. Wang has published more than 300 journal papers, about 200 of which are in international journals, and has written 5 books on refrigeration technologies. He was elected as one of the top one hundred outstanding professors in China Universities by MOE China in 2007. Prof. Wang was appointed deputy Editor-in-Chief for the international journal Energy and Associate editor of Solar Energy. In the last ten years, he has been invited to give plenary lectures in international conferences more than 10 times.

Not for your average reader

I like the concepts of the subconscious mind games people play with each other but the writing is extremely technical and very hard for me to understand without going back and re-reading the same paragraph over and over again until it makes sense. Not an easy read.

The last few books have just been amazing. I approached this latest novel with trepidation

Wow, I have been reading R.A. Salvatore for over 20 years! The last few books have just been amazing. I approached this latest novel with trepidation. I have read all of the Forgotten Realms novels that I know of, and Gromph has been my favorite. Call me nostalgic, but he always reminded me a little of Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance. Anyway, The Archmage was a great book. Gromph has been a character in the Drizzt books, Daughter of the Drow trilogy by Elaine Cunningham(Liriel Baenre is his daughter!) and he could almost be considered the main character in War of the Spider Queen 6 part set. His battle with the Drowliche is truly epic! Along with Drizzt, Jarlaxle, and all the usual characters, we met a few new and interesting people as well. Salvatore brought some serious intrigue to the realms as a whole. This novel covers a lot of ground, and gets wheels turning for what is shaping up to be the best series in the realms. My favorite have been The Brotherhood of the Griffon, Return of the Archwizards, and The Last Mythal to name a few. I like the epic scope, and the huge focus on magic. Salvatore was missing that for so long. I won't spoil it, but the though of Gromph and what the future might hold makes me really really want to read the next book. April 2016! I put Ed Greenwoods Spellstorm on hold to read this, and I couldn't stop. Why can't we see more books like this published? Will it help if I buy 2 copies of each? 5? I miss the days of old where we had a handful of FR novels every month, now we are getting that amount in a year. Enjoy it!

Out of principal do not buy this book while kindle version is $28 **Edit - Very Good

I hate to give a rating like this, but I must. Do not buy this book at this price!!! This is ridiculous. Hopefully with these recent negative reviews I see the overall rating will go down and so will sales and RA Salvatore and the publisher will hopefully take note. I saw some posts referring to Amazon as the culprit, but the price is the same at other places so I believe the publisher is at fault. Please do not buy any format for this book while the kindle version is $27. $7-10 is more than reasonable for a fantasy book, especially one with no printing costs. There are always other means to get books... I pay because I support the authors and this is like a slap in the face.

**Edit - I ended up getting this book on audible with credits I had available. Also, the price has come down to a reasonable level so I have updated my review. One of the best in the series, and I really like the series. Would be better if it was a bit deeper (the interludes are my least favorite part) or more complex characters, but for what this style book being action/adventure heavy even within the fantasy genre it is definitely 5 star. Can't wait to get my hands on Maestro. Who doesn't love Jarlaxle the living breathing deus ex machina.

Maybe shine more light on the supporting cast in future entries.

For me, Drizzt is fast becoming far less interesting than the supporting cast. His journal entries to start new sections of the books epitomize my feelings on his character development; between musings about possible 'good goblin kin' and Cattie-brie's "kill em all" ideology handed straight down from Mielikki I'm starting to wonder why he hasn't put forth some thought of taking an expedition to Menzoberranzan and putting his birthplace to the torch. Has it never dawned on him or his friends that the Drow will keep coming for him/them forevermore?

Two ideas spur this on for me (w/o trying to be spoilery) 1. an orc wonders at regaining the acceptance/tolerance of the silver marches and 2. a nominal/cannon fodder race of the underdark shows some actual ingenuity. Our main character is front and center for both of these events.

This isn't to say I don't still enjoy Mr. Salvatore's books, contraire. At this point, and for this book, Gromph and Jarlaxle are the scene stealing characters. I sincerely hope that the focus shifts from the 'companions of the hall' to the 'brothers grim' in future volumes.

Or hell, maybe we'll finely get that Zaknafein back story and learn that he was a Baenre cousin.....

DREDD RULES!

DREDD is a fantastic movie, and I loved this compilation of previus novels. This novels are surprising good!Full action and gore with great stories. I think they have to publish again all these novels in compendium format like this book. And a bunch of new novels willbe great too!.

Good 2 out of 3 collection of previous Judge Dredd books

I'm a "mid-range" Dredd fan... I'm familiar with more than just the 2 movies (Karl Urban one is great, Stallone's not so much), but not near as much as the die-hard and long-time fans... so that's where I'm coming from in my expectations for this book. However, I'm an avid comic and book reader, so that plays into this review as well.

First off this 3-story collection really doesn't have anything to do with the Karl Urban "Dredd" movie: It's merely a re-packaging of 3 previously-issued Judge Dredd books. The Dredd movie was a lot more "realistic" than the Judge Dredd comic universe and these stories feel more like they're in the latter, with robots, mutants, and space ships.

I've written small reviews of all 3 stories under the respective book names, but here's a quick recap.

Dredd vs. Death: 2 stars for its lifeless writing (and to start this collection off with this non-page-turner is a mistake)
Kingdom of the Blind: 4 stars for this captivating story (and VAST improvement over David Bishop's first Dredd book, "Savage Amusement")
The Final Cut: 4 stars for great writing and solid story, though having one of the main characters be written in First Person (while the rest of the story is Third Person), is a mistake, in my view.

So if you don't have any of these 3 books in their previous forms, this collection is worth picking up, for the last 2 stories. I would still love to read a true Dredd (Karl Urban movie) story, where it "feels" like you're in that version of Mega-City One. Because when I read these, I really feel I'm in that comic world, with a more gravely-voiced, long-chinned Dredd. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.
