The Skull of Pancho Villa and Other Stories, by Manuel Ramos

Legend has it that Pancho Villa’s grave was robbed—and his head stolen—in 1926. A gringo is credited with the theft, but Gus Corral’s great-grandfather was there too. As often happens to Chicanos, his role was given short shrift. But the Corral family has taken care of the skull for as long as Gus can remember. It’s a jolt when “Panchito” is stolen from his sister’s house. It’s the only connection to the old-timers of the family, so Gus knows he will have to get to the bottom of the disappearance, even if it means tangling with thieves and thugs.

A variety of characters—writers, attorneys, Vietnam vets, cops, soldiers—populate these stories in which situations frequently aren’t what they seem. An old man knows more about the disappearance of a neighbor than he lets on. A barber is involved in something that brings a ski-mask wearing, gun-toting hoodlum into his shop. And a cop accused of using excessive force hasn’t told his family the whole truth.

Many stories in this gripping collection feature Mexican Americans struggling with their circumstances as an ethnic minority in the United States. Others cover historical events, from the Mexican Revolution to an encounter with Jack Kerouac. All spotlight Ramos’ artistry and dexterity as he shifts from noir to historical and even ficcin rpida, or flash fiction. Spanning his acclaimed writing career, this volume includes Ramos’ first story published in 1986, “White Devils and Cockroaches,” which features an attorney who served as the prototype for Luis Mntez, the protagonist in five of his award-winning novels.

Chicano noir...and more!
By Si Dunn
Seemingly mundane moments in life quickly spin out of control in this engaging collection of short stories. And Manuel Ramos frequently comes up with some surprising endings for his tales.

Some of his short stories can be labeled “Chicano noir.” They get dark and gritty as they move along through the struggles and ragged edges of Mexican-American life in the United States. Meanwhile, other stories in the collection explore different themes, such as the thoughts of a young Mexican-American soldier as he lays dying in Vietnam, and what happens when a Mexican-American shoeshine boy gets pulled into a barroom fight and is defended by the writer Jack Kerouac.

In this collection, Ramos's stories are entertaining and easily accessible at a universal level. And he writes with a smooth clarity that looks simple on the page, yet is very difficult for most authors to achieve.

Excellent Variety Pack
By Mark Stevens
The Skull of Pancho Villa And Other Stories is a full-flavor variety pack of styles and moods. One story might pack a punch, the next might move your heart.

This collection is a Manuel Ramos master class in effortless, engaging prose—no pretensions, all story. The scenes are frequently downbeat—but not all. The characters hang or thrive on the fringes and in the shadows—but not all. Most are set in Denver—but not all. L.A. shows up and El Paso, too. Most of these stories move in a world of green chile and sausage sandwiches, bar tops and back alleys, Tecates and Coronas.

A few examples:

In “No Hablo Ingls,” disbarred lawyer Manolo is hungover in a town he hates “but that wasn’t El Paso’s fault. I hated myself and that meant I hated wherever I woke up.” Manolo’s world is about to go south.

In “White Devils and Cockroaches,” Gonzlez is “damn good legal aid lawyer” but finds himself representing “crazies, weirdos, misfits, losers and plain folks who got taken.” His latest client works as a dishwasher at the White Spot. Gonzlez, in short, is not the slick wolf of Wall Street. He’s the scraggly coyote of Capitol Hill—and he’s pretty damn close to his breaking point.

“When the Air Conditioner Quit” (funniest short story title ever?) starts with a gunshot but that isn’t the only violence in this taut seven-page story of street rules, deception and nasty surprises.

There are 23 three stories in four sections—Basic Black, Outlaws, Lovers and Chicanismo. One of the 23 is a poem (“The Smell of Onions”) but It starts with a line that is pure short story: “Shorty stumbled from the Rainbow Inn/Jenny would give him hell again.” That is a great opening couplet with a wonderful rhyme: and how can you not read more?

I particularly enjoyed Ramos’ first-person stories, like the whole chunk (Chapter 5) from “Desperado—A Mile High Noir” that is a stand-alone tale in the title story here, “The Skull of Pancho Villa.” In first-person mode, Ramos goes into ultra-glide mode with his prose, so smooth and unassuming and laid-back. “You’ve heard the story, maybe read something about it in the newspaper or a magazine. How Pancho Villa’s grave was robbed in 1926 and his head taken.” This one is rife with the wry humor of Gus Corral, who may or may not be telling the truth.

Many of the stories contain a few delectable noir touches, like this one from "If We Had Been Dancing:"

“She licked the wet edge of her glass with a tiny pink tongue and did a move with her shoulders that could have been a dance step, if we had been on the dance floor, if we had been dancing.”

Ramos makes it look easy.

There’s no way to wrap these stories in one box with a neat bow, and that will keep you turning the pages. Some feature writers and lawyers (particularly in the “Bad Haircut Day,” a wonderful tale of street ethics) from mainstream society and several are creative, brisk sketches that show a poet’s heart. But when Gus Corral turns to the audience for a comment in “The Skull of Pancho Villa,” he sums up the feeling I get from many of the stories in this anthology, which gathers gems from nearly 20 years of Ramos’ works.

“Okay,” says Corral, “right about now you’re thinking, call the cops, Gus. Don’t be a pendejo. Let the law handle it. But see, you don’t live in my world, man. Where I come from, the cops aren’t your first line of defense. You didn’t grow up constantly squaring off against cabrones like Jessie. You never had to accept that every lousy week another clown would challenge your manhood and you would have to beat or be beaten.”

True fact—I don’t live in these worlds. But Ramos is our tour guide. And for that we can all be thankful. With extra hot green chile on top.

Revolutionaries, Jack Kerouac, and Killers
By Mona AlvaradoFrazier
Some unusual characters (Jack Kerouac, vets, cops, soldiers, tagger) show up in Manuel Ramos most interesting short story collection, including a mystery about the theft and subsequent whereabouts of Pancho Villa's head.

I've enjoyed Ramos' four fiction and mystery/noir novels, so I was eager to read this collection. From the legend of La Llorona, and the robbery of Pancho Villa's grave in 1926 to the contemporary stories of a cop, burned-out attorney, a screenwriter, and gentrified neighborhoods, these stories capture the history, culture and language of the Chicano/Mexican in the U.S., specifically set in Denver, Colorado.

The stories range from 'flash fiction,' to longer pieces and short or not, they all pack a scene with authenticity and interest.

A copy of this collection was sent to me for an honest review by Arte Pblico Press.

The result of more than two decades of research, it offers cutting-edge science and exciting new insights into the American obesity epidemic and our relationship with eating and food.

Is Your Diet Making You Fat?

From her Health and Eating Laboratory at the University of Minnesota, Professor Traci Mann researches self-control and dieting. And what she has discovered is groundbreaking: not only do diets not work, they often result in weight gain. We are losing the battle of the bulge because our bodies and brains are not hardwired to resist food—in fact, the very idea of it works against our biological imperative to survive.

In Secrets from the Eating Lab, Mann challenges assumptions—including those that make up the foundation of the weight loss industry—about how diets work and why they fail. As Mann explains, most weight loss plans are reliant on the notion of willpower—and willpower is an illusion. Moreover, even when we are able to successfully lose weight, our bodies fight our efforts, seeking to regain the weight we've worked so hard to lose. In the end, we become chronic "yo-yo" dieters, destined to lose and regain the same pounds time and again. The diet industry is well aware of these facts and has tellingly built their business model on the concept of the "repeat customer"; they know we'll be back.

The result of more than two decades of research, Secrets from the Eating Lab presents cutting-edge science and offers exciting new insights into the American obesity epidemic and our relationship with food. From redefining "comfort food" to reconsidering healthy food labeling that, ironically, makes us less inclined to make healthy choices, Mann presents an arsenal of simple, common-sense strategies that take advantage of human nature instead of fighting it—helping you to achieve a healthy and sustainable weight.

Fascinating account of why diets fail and how fear of obesity is making things even worse
By Todd I. Stark
This is a very well written and uniquely informative book in a field glutted with opinions and weak and conflicting advice. It is not a how-to book on losing weight, although it has a few solid behavioral suggestions for making modest healthy changes. This is primarily an interpretation of much of the available evidence regarding obesity and health by psychologist who runs an eating lab at the University of Minnesota and publishes a lot of scholarly peer reviewed work in the field.

Although she is a researcher, Dr. Mann takes pains to distinguish herself from obesity researchers with a public health focus who are motivated to warn people about the dangers of increasing body fat. Her interpretation of the data is often the opposite in some ways from theirs, she sees the growing incidence of body fat and she sees the growing incidence of adult onset diabetes, but she reports that the link between body fat and health problems is far weaker than is implied by the rhetoric of most obesity researchers and much weaker than the popular impression has become. In addition, our efforts to fight obesity have, she concludes, actually become counter-productive because of the manner in which we typically attempt to fight our own biology by restricting calories and exercising in ways that increase our stresses and increase our preoccupation with food, and that both of these things feed back into exacerbating the original problem.

The book starts off ripping into both the commercial diet industry and the focus of a lot of articles by doctors and obesity researchers by announcing that their "3 pillars" are all simply false:

1. That some diets work for losing weight
2. That some diets are healthy for losing weight
3. That obesity itself is deadly

Among the central and most compelling aspects of this book is where Mann observes that our ideal body image often tends to be outside of the range that we can reasonably sustain. And this becomes confused with health concerns and fed by commercial interests. We could transform our bodies potentially through diet and exercise, but at the cost of altering or entire lives in the service of that goal and experiencing extended self-denial and obsession with food.

And the clincher for her argument is that all this self-denial and obsession would be mostly serving our aesthetic ideal rather than actually improving health. She finds that according to best available evidence upon close inspection mortality is not significantly improved by losing weight, unless you are already extremely obese and still have a long life ahead of you. The population in that category is far smaller than the one targeted by both the diet and fitness industries and most obesity researchers.

Mann finds that diets consistently fail in two ways: (1) only a tiny percentage of dieters retain their weight loss, regardless of which diet it is, and (2) even when people lose enough weight to satisfy the goals of improving their risk profile, they rarely lose enough to satisfy their aesthetic preference. This means that according to the person themselves, their diet failed even when for health purposes it succeeds. Our aesthetic goals trump our health goals for the purpose of satisfaction with the diet.

If we should want to attempt small changes that help us regulate our own eating so we can maintain a sustainably lower body weight, Mann offers several well-tested behavioral suggestions along the lines of "nudges" that help us avoid being triggered to eat excessively.

I think her principles seem sound and her use of evidence is compelling. I would say that anyone who wants to lose a few pounds permanently would probably benefit from the sort of cognitive-behavioral suggestions Mann gives in her book.

I do have a criticism of her otherwise superb and unique exposition though.

She argues for a set point model of body weight regulation that maintains our weight within a fairly narrow range but she doesn't really address the obvious question of why people are statistically getting fatter if we are so consistent at maintaining our weight in such a narrow range. She puts most of her focus on obesity not being as deadly as it appears except at the extreme, and she explains why people can't simply diet away unwanted body fat, but she doesn't at all dive into the reasons for our growing bodies.

That's a big topic and it isn't her area of research so I can understand leaving it to others to try to explain, but for me it left a logical hole in her argument that begs to be filled and should have been addressed with at least some general thoughts. She should have touched on the moving of "settling points" that move somewhat rather than implying a single weight range exists for each person. Clearly that range shifts under different clusters of life conditions. That's not just important because we need to explain why we get fatter. It is also important because we need to explain the few outlier cases where people do successfully make the changes needed to lose very large amounts of weight and keep it off for years or decades. They are I think becoming different people in a sense, with different weight regulation settling points resulting from different activity patterns and eating habits and different environmental conditions. She doesn't really seem to allow for that at all. Her insistence that a "diet" doesn't allow for that may give a misleading impression that people _never_ successfully lose significant weight for the long term. That is clearly not true. Playing the odds is fine, and we need to be realistic about what is required, but knowing why the outliers succeed is important as well.

The reason she is right most of the time I think is that it is a lot more work than we expect to be able to do the experimentation and learning and self-observation needed to learn to avoid temptations and prepare our own food in a nutritious way and so on, and as she says, "diet" to most people means eating certain things, not engaging in a challenging ongoing learning process and strategically altering clusters of habits. If you expect to do that sort of thing, then I think it is entirely possible to shift from one "settling point" to another to lose a lot of weight over time and keep it off. She is right that if you do this kind of staged life adjustment to become very lean, you will have a much harder time maintaining it in general until it becomes a developmental change. She is right that this cannot possibly be done in most cases simply by acts of discipline. You have to become smart about it.

Sneaky Experiments & Pracitial Ideas From the Eating Lab
By Bassocantor
SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB is a very unique book. I don't believe I've ever read a book on eating that is based upon research from an eating lab. The author conducted her experiments on eating in a pretty sneaky way: "I tell our research participants that we are studying other things entirely, such as their memory or their moods or how they communicate with their friends. But being the hospitable people we are, we just happen to offer them snacks while we study them. They have no idea that it's what they do with these snacks that were really studying. "Sneaky, sneaky!

The author admits she was very surprised by her findings: "Much to my surprise, I've learned that nearly everything I thought was true about eating was false. "Perhaps one of the most important conclusions of this book regards the failures of diets: "The most rigorous diet studies find that about half of dieters will weigh more for 25 years after the diet ends than they did before the diet began."

One of the big problems with diets is that diets cause stress. But a stress response itself is something that leads to weight gain! "Stress cannot be avoided when you are dieting because dieting itself causes stress. Dieting causes the stress response that has already been showed to lead to weight gain."

One of the recurring themes of SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB is how realistic your weight goal is. Your realistic weight is highly correlated to the weight of your biological parents. She cites studies with twins who are living in separate homes. They discovered that the weight of the twins was very similar to each other, even though they had been raised in separate households.

The author estimates that your genes account for 70 percent of the variation in your weight. It's not that you can't affect your weight at all but that what you can change is probably a lot more limited than you think: "Your body is trying to keep you within that genetically determined set weight range."

The most controversial part of this book will certainly be Dr. Mann's assertions about obesity. She points out that the scientific evidence does not really support the idea that all obesity is unhealthy. The author cites a study which found that overweight people actually had a slightly lower risk of death than normal weight people. In fact, "being overweight appears to be even a bit healthier than being the recommended weight." The doctor clarifies that it's not slightly obese people that have the health risks--it's what are called "Class 3 Obesity." And only 6 percent of the US population is in that category.

A surprising finding from the author's research is what is called the "obesity paradox." This section of the book was a real eye opener for me. Here's the paradox: Obesity in America has greatly increased over the past few decades. One would think, therefore, that the rate of diabetes would have skyrocketed, but it has not. Dr. Mann points out that the prevalence of diabetes went from 9% to 11%, and that the rate of cardiovascular disease actually decreased.

Dr. Mann recommends that you aim for your lowest realistic weight--not some idealistic weight that is not actually attainable. Rather than going on and off diets, you exercise, eat nutritiously, avoid weight cycling, and get proper medical care. She gives lots of practical suggestions on how to do this. For example, remember that the actions of people around you do has a great impact on how you eat.

The author is a big proponent of regular exercise, even though it doesn't usually lead to big weight loss. The benefits of exercise are numerous, the author points out. Simply put, "Exercise prevents death," and exercise "works as well as drugs in preventing death among people with heart disease, stroke, or pre-diabetes." In addition, "Exercise helps even if you don't lose weight." Exercise also helps reduce stress. You really do feel better on a regimen of exercise.

The author has some final words for the reader in the section called "Final Words: Diet Schmiet." She really discourages the reader from trying to go on diets: "Diets don't work. Big deal. You don't need them to work. You need to not go on them." Instead, she suggests, "reach your leanest livable weight, that comfortable weight at the lower end of your set range. You'll have no trouble reaching it if you exercise regularly and use some of the smart regulation strategies in this book to create reasonable eating habits."

All in all, I found SECRETS FROM THE EATING LAB to be a surprising book, with some very unusual conclusions. The author's experience and qualifications are solid, but this book is bound to be controversial, because it takes aim at some of the core assumptions in the health/diet world.

Advance copy for impartial review.

Outstanding with One Small Caveat
By Joan Ifland
I like this book very much and strongly recommend the trigger management strategies. Dr. Mann has done extensive research into the role of food reminders and cues in our surroundings that direct our brains to choose unhealthy foods. I also advocate avoiding cues for processed foods as an effective and essential strategy for gaining control over eating in the intense obesogenic environments of westernized cultures. The book hits one strong well-supported note after another. It is encouraging to see so much solid research translated into easy-to-use strategies. I would recommend the book for the purpose of learning how to live in a westernized culture and protect against cravings triggers. It could make the difference between success and failure at improving eating behaviors.
The other thing I like about the book is that the trigger-avoidance advice is consistent with models that explain overeating as an addiction to processed foods. Drug and alcohol addicts are also advised to avoid people, places, and things associated with the use of addictive substances. Dr. Mann’s book supports the idea that for addictive processed foods, cue-avoidance is a much more complex task and she provides appropriately comprehensive strategies for accomplishing this. Such a high level of understanding is unusual and makes the book very worthwhile.
If you are recovering from addiction to processed foods, I would offer a word of caution. Research shows that even small amounts of processed foods can trigger the cravings associated with the addiction. So for food-addicted readers of this otherwise outstanding book, please don’t be persuaded that by following cue avoidance and a generally healthy diet, it could be safe to eat small quantities of addictive processed foods.

Superhroes reales?
By Rodrigo

Comics
By Martn Castro

Understanding viscoelasticity is pertinent to design applications as diverse as earplugs, gaskets, computer disks, satellite stability, medical diagnosis, injury prevention, vibration abatement, tire performance, sports, spacecraft explosions, and music. This book fits a one-semester graduate course on the properties, analysis, and uses of viscoelastic materials. Those familiar with the author's precursor book, Viscoelastic Solids, will see that this book contains many updates and expanded coverage of the materials science, causes of viscoelastic behavior, properties of materials of biological origin, and applications of viscoelastic materials. The theoretical presentation includes both transient and dynamic aspects, with emphasis on linear viscoelasticity to develop physical insight. Methods for the solution of stress analysis problems are developed and illustrated. Experimental methods for characterization of viscoelastic materials are explored in detail. Viscoelastic phenomena are described for a wide variety of materials, including viscoelastic composite materials. Applications of viscoelasticity and viscoelastic materials are illustrated with case studies.

Viscoelastic Materials
By Danton
I enjoyed reading this book. The text is clearly written and contains a great deal of practical information about viscoelastic materials and their characterization. While some topics are written with graduate students in mind -stating results and omitting crucial derivations, or presuming familiarity with elasticity and continuum mechanics- the treatment of other topics starts from the elementary and can be easily followed by undergraduate-level readers. Yet some topics, like the propagation of harmonic waves, are incomprehensively simplified by treating only the case of viscoelastic materials with negligible damping, apparently to avoid the use of complex algebra. I particularly disagreed with the treatment of Poisson's ratio of viscoelastic materials; where the author uses the inconsistent assumptions of a contant bulk modulkus and a time-dependent Poisson's ratio to conclude that the Poisson's ratio of a viscoelastic material, derived from a relaxation test, differs from that derived from a creep test.

Peter Smith has joined forces with skilled consultants to take his piping series to the next level. The Planning Guide to Piping Design covers the entire process of planning a plant model project from conceptual to mechanical completion, and explains where the piping lead falls in the process along with his roles and responsibilities. Piping Engineering Leads (or PEL's) used to only receive on-the-job training to learn the operation of producing a process plant. Over time, more schools and programs have developed a more advanced curriculum for piping engineers and designers. However, younger generations of engineers and designers are growing up with a much more technological view of piping design and are in need of a handbook that will explain the proven methods of planning and monitoring the piping design in step-by-step processes. This handbook will provide mentors in the process piping industries the bridge needed for the upcoming engineer and designer to grasp the requirements of piping supervision in the modern age.

About the Author
Richard Beale has over 40 years of plant layout and piping design experience on upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas industry projects in the employ of engineering, fabrication, construction and producer companies. His career started as a junior piping draftsman in 1974, and over the years he has held the roles of piping drafter, piping designer, piping squad leader, project piping lead, design and drafting department manager, and technical support to fabrication and construction. He is currently employed by a major oil and gas producer in Engineering Information Management. Having witnessed the technological transition from manual design and drafting to 2D CAD and 3D CAD, he holds a firm belief that a key ingredient to full realization of successful project execution through the adoption of new design technology is being lost. This being a corresponding erosion of experienced design and drafting practitioners possessing of the abilities to develop, modify, and execute new and existing design and drafting procedures that complement the changing technology. It is this belief that has stirred him to write this book as a way of filling the experience gap

Paul Bowers is a senior piping designer with over 30 years of experience working on major process plant projects including refining, cryogenics, pulp & paper, petrochemical, industrial gas installations and SAGD as well as CAD/engineering automation administration. As a software and technology enthusiast Paul believes that machines must adapt to humans and not the other way around.

Currently residing in the Montreal area, Paul has been owner of the PipingDesign.com domain since 1998 is currently webmaster / web developer / "Digital Administrator" and a director with the Houston-based Society of Piping Engineers and Designers as well as founder and past president of the Calgary chapter of the same organization.

This book is a fine addition to the family of Piping Engineering & Design technical books. It is the second one (see Piping Engineering Leadership for Process Plant Projects, ISBN 0-88415-347-9, published 2001) dealing with the Supervision and Management of the overall Piping effort on process plant projects of all sizes. The three authors of this book have done a fine job of detailing important piping issues and activities critical to the effective management of manpower, resources and deliverables. Examples of key items include; the importance of the Scope of Work (SOW); Change Management; information and document control; and who should do Line Numbering and how it should be done. I judge piping technical books on the basis of whether or not I could use them as a classroom text book and, yes I could use this book if I were teaching a class in Piping Supervision.

Perfect gift. Many of the songs would take me about a 1-2 days of practice to get down (I've played since elementary school). Intricate enough to sound interesting, but not overly difficult. A lot of the pieces are 2-3 pages long... I wish some of them could have been longer, but will be perfect for sacrament meeting performances.
