Well worth it

I bought this book and it completely helped on the Fire Fighter I exam. I scored a 95%, which was higher than I anticipated, but this book made me feel very confident, which was what I was looking for. I also passed the Fire Fighter II with this book. 84% on FFII.

I was really surprised how many questions on the exam I had seen in this book. It was the first exam that I was actually amused taking it because I had seen everything before. In the end, I am glad I bought it because confidence never hurts!!

Great Prep for FF1 Mid-Term and Final

I hold a graduate degree and wanted to volunteer in my community. Firefighting 1 required the textbook Delmar, Firefighter's Handbook, 2nd Edition. Since the required textbook contains several hundred pages of unfamiliar material I bought the book primarily because I needed an aid to outline the important areas to study.

Although each question is not explained in detail. The answer key refers to various textbook pages for your research. A few HAZMAT questions are covered on the FF1 material, however, this book does not cover that material.

The following books are referenced in each answer key: Delmar, Firefighter's Handbook, 3rd Edition; IFSTA, Essentials of Firefighting and Department Operations 5th Edition; Jones and Bartlett, NFPA, Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 2nd Edition. I had no problems researching the material in Delmar, Firefighter's Handbook, 3rd Edition although the Academy required use of the Delmar's 2nd Edition.

Pros: the information is easily laid out for review. The information is relevant to FF 1 and 2 although most of my graduating class passed the exam without this study book. I believe they could have improved their scores with this study material as well as increased their personal knowledge. This book will help you become more engaged in the subject matter.

Study Plan: A successful student will read the course material (Fundamentals of Fire Fighter Skills, 2nd Edition) and pay very close attention to the Academy Instructors during classes and field training (listen to everything they say; they welcome questions). The instructors in New Hampton, New York are very well versed in their specific areas of expertise. They take their jobs seriously, have a passion to teach, and want you to succeed. Then, use this study guide to enhance your knowledge of the subject matter. If you have the money go for it although you can pass Firefighter 1 without this book if you know what to study.

A good study guide that I liked... but...

First let's define what this book is. It is a set of practice exam questions... 3 exams for FF1 and 3 exams for FF2. The exams in each section build on each other. The book contains the answer key that also gives you the reference (book/page) to the correct answer. There is a process that book outlines that I think is a good one and should be followed.

My issues: I found at least one incorrect answer (Minor issue). While the questions in this book are good and cover a wide range of material, there really weren't that many questions that helped me with the exams that I took in the State of Kansas (KF&RTI). This book may have more applicability to other state exams than mine. So while I like the book, I wouldn't recommend it for any taking the exam in Kansas, your mileage may vary.

How to Shoot Spring Rifles is a book that gave me a some great ideas on shooting. The book is a great book for all shooters being that they are new at the game or been doing it for years. I would recommend this to everyone that is looking to shoot.

Jan has developed a national and international reputation as a conference speaker, consultant and trainer and he has written widely on different aspects of Early Years pedagogy.�

About the Author
Alf Evers was born in New York and brought up on a farm in Ulster County. As a boy, one of his favorite activities was listening to the tales of old-timers. He went to school in New Paltz, and attended Hamilton College and the Arts Student League. Among his varied occupations have been farming, landscape gardening, creating greeting card verses-and by no means least, writing over fifty children's books. He has also contributed many articles to newspapers and to the New York Conservationist, was on the editorial board of "New York Folklore Quarterly," and was vice president of the New York State Folklore Society and town historian of Woodstock.

Soo T. Tan has published numerous papers in Optimal Control Theory and Numerical Analysis. He received his S.B. degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. "One of the most important lessons I learned from my early experience teaching these courses is that many of the students come into these courses with some degree of apprehension. Horrible Textbook

This was by far the worst math book I've ever had the misfortune of having to use. It was the worst textbook I've ever seen. Don't waste your money on the new edition. It is EXACTLY the same as the old versions, they only changed a few of the problems in the homework and some of they problems they only changed the years from 2011 to 2014 and B.S. like that. If you're being forced to use this book for a class, then do yourself a favor and find a friend with the new textbook and copy the problems because that's all you need.
Don't buy this book for it's explanations. It was terribly confusing, had inconsistent formatting and style. Even the way that the questions were written was the most inconsistent mess I had ever seen.
There are whole chapters where all of the problems literally just tell you to all the problems in the last chapter but change some of the numbers. The book is so lazy, SOOOOO lazy. They weren't even trying to hide that they didn't care when writing this book. None of the new versions fix any of these problems either.
This book is an embarrassment to textbooks everywhere.

However, my book did arrive on time and with almost all the pages intact, so good on you for that.

Inside Tracks - a parallel reality in beautiful images

I love the film "Tracks"(starring Mia Wasikowska), it's breathtakingly beautiful and moving, and I love the brilliant Robyn Davidson memoir upon which it was based. There is more than one angle to a story, especially one as personal, mythic, both timeless and of-a-time, as the journey in "Tracks". This gorgeous and exquisitely detailed coffee-table book, "Inside Tracks", is obviously a labor of love that brings into sharp focus (how's that for a metaphor) a young woman's compelling trek across the outback that opened endless vistas, both outward, and, most tellingly, within herself. With both the original stunning photographs and then contemporary ones from the film and it's production, this edition of Robyn Davidson's story really helps draw together the real and the abstract journey it has taken over the last several decades - from trek, to photos, to book and now to movie. The photographer Rick Smolan (played by Adam Driver in the film) has really created a thing of beauty that will take me a while to absorb - this is a wonderful book, for the photos and also for the text and the movie's script, with accompanying stills. There's also some superb writing from Robyn herself that is strategically placed halfway in the book, between the original journey and the one taken in the film. I'm also looking forward to making use of the smartphone application, which can only heighten the parallel reality of this unique and memorable journey.

Saw this movie in the theater and couldn't wait for it to be released on DVD. So much more of an accomplishment than Cheryl Strayed in Wild. Also bought the book by Robyn Davidson and the book of photographer Rick Smolan. Went on eBay and got the National Geographic magazine from May 1978. Definitely a movie to have in your personal library.

About the Author
Barbara Stuart (BSc(Hons), MSc(Syd), PhD(Lond), DIC, MRSC, MRACI, Cchem)
After graduating with a BSc degree from the University of Sydney in Australia, Barbara Stuart worked as a tutor at this university. She also carried out research in the field of biophysical chemistry in the Department of Physical Chemistry and graduated with a MSc in 1990. The author moved to the UK to carry out doctoral studies in polymer engineering within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemical Technology at Imperial College (University of London). After obtaining her PhD in 1993, she took up a position as Lecturer in Physical Chemistry at the University of Greenwich in London. Barbara joined the staff at the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia in 1995, where she is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry, Materials and Forensic Science. She is presently conducting research in the fields of polymer spectroscopy, materials conservation and forensic science. Barbara is the author of four books published by Wiley, "Modern Infrared Spectroscopy", "Biological Applications of Infrared Spectroscopy", "Polymer Analysis" and "Infrared Spectroscopy: Fundamentals and Applications" in the current ANTS series of texts and "Analytical Techniques in Materials Conservation".

Clearly explained (forensic) analytical techniques in a nutshell

I've been looking for a long time for a book that would introduce me to the world of forensic chemical analysis (I'm a chemist).
This book is truly the best one I could have wished for!

"Forensic Analytical Techniques" presents a spectrum of currently used methods in the context of a particular application, such as the analysis of drugs, inks or explosives. Drugs, for example, are dealt with in the chapter of Microscopic techniques (characteristic crystal morphology of the drugs), Separation techniques (drug identification by HPLC), Mass spectrometry (isotopic ratio indicating the origin of the drug) etc.

The techniques are explained in a clear and straightforward way and this is in my opinion the biggest advantage of the book. Even the methods that require a more advanced theoretical background were described in a very approachable way, indicating author's fluency in the topic.
In my opinion, only the self-assesment questions were too little insightful as sometimes the answer was literally written a line before. It is also where I have found a couple of small mistakes (for example in question 4.14).

I would like to recommend the book not only to analytical chemists but to chemist in general, as a intelligible overview of chemical analytical techniques.

Great book, great service.

Fairly detailed text book. Delves into some of the more current aspects of evidence processing techniques. Recommended for anyone working in a crime lab or in any medico-legal capacity.
