I bought the book after seeing a BBC children's program posted on youtube, where someone read it at loud and did an amazing job. I strongly recommend googling it and watching it before you buy the book. You get to see all the pictures and hear the entire story and a very successful narration. I fell in love with it just then.

The book is beautifully illustrated, and a wonderful story that delivers the message in a nuanced way. My 3-year old asked to re-read it over and over again, enjoying the transformation from "he wants to eat her!" to "he is her friend!" (in the kid's words, pointing at the pictures). I am almost certain that I saw my husband's eyes wet after reading the story the first time and he is a "manly man" in a very gender-stereotypical sense.

Wonderful!

My son, who has Autism, read this book in school and was quoting it constantly. We went to the library to check it out, and I, my husband, and our daughter (who also has Autism) fell in love with it, so we bought a copy. I read it to my kids every night, and my son does the voices of the wolf and the lamb. It is adorable, and the illustrations are PERFECT!
(Yesterday I read it to my kids in front of my mom, who is visiting, and now she loves it too, lol!)
Definitely worth the purchase!

About the Author
Timothy Rasinski is a professor of literacy education at Kent State University. He has written over 200 articles and has authored, co-authored or edited over 50 books or curriculum programs on reading education. He is author of the best selling book on reading fluency entitled The Fluent Reader, published by Scholastic, and co-author of the award winning fluency program called Fluency First, published by the Wright Group. His scholarly interests include reading fluency and word study, reading in the elementary and middle grades, and readers who struggle. His research on reading has been cited by the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, Reading Psychology, and the Journal of Educational Research. Tim is currently writing the fluency chapter for Volume IV of the Handbook of Reading Research.
Tim recently served a three year term on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and from 1992 to 1999 he was co-editor of The Reading Teacher, the world's most widely read journal of literacy education. He has also served as co-editor of the Journal of Literacy Research. Rasinski is past-president of the College Reading Association and he has won the A. B. Herr and Laureate Awards from the College Reading Association for his scholarly contributions to literacy education.
Prior to coming to Kent State Tim taught literacy education at the University of Georgia. He taught for several years as an elementary and middle school classroom and Title I teacher in Nebraska.

Nancy Padak is a nationally known author and teacher educator at Kent State University.

This is a great resource for any classroom teacher. The assessments are user-friendly and help you to quickly pinpoint reading difficulties. Unlike many other assessments, there is a comprehension piece in addition to expression and automaticity. I photocopy kids' results to share with parents; and the assessments are simple enough that parents are able to understand the results and practice specific skills with their child at home.

Why four, not five stars: They're more like five or six minute assessments once you actually write down all your notes. I've used them for awhile, and even with practice am never done in three minutes. I also wish there were more passages for each grade level. Overall though, a great book and one of my more often-used teacher resources.

Much room for improvement

Mixed feeling on this book. Some chapters are wonderfully written and quite insightful. Other ones get lost on technicalities and fail to produce any interesting point. Overall it is unsure whether it treats the subject (brand mascots) comercially or as an academic paper. I confess I had higher expectations.

How the system really works

Workers are the ones who produce value. Bosses produce essentially nothing. The profits that bosses make are stolen from the workers This is a central insight of Marxist economics that this book does a good job of explaining. It also has an interesting discussion of "neo-capitalism" which is the form of capitalism that arose after World War II--capitalism that needed massive government intervention to survive. Mandel shows how war spending allows capitalism to avoid major depressions and how social programs blunt the effects of economic crisis on the workers, and thereby postpone revolutionary situations. It's especially interesting to read this book now, thirty years after it was written, since it makes a point of saying that the post-World War II prosperity would not last forever. It didn't and we've now entered a period of history where world economic depression, the rise of fascist movements, and attacks on social programs like welfare, social security, unemployment compensation, etc. are the norm. Mandel's book helps make sense of this miserable system so that we can chart a way forward to destroy it.

A Modern Classic

This is probably the world's most read primer in orthodox Marxist economic theory - and deservedly so. It flawlessly covers all 'the basics': the theory of value and surplus value (ch.1); capital and capitalism [historical bacground, and basic dynamics] (ch.2); and neo-capitalism [role of the state & war] (ch.3). It does all this in tight, non-technical style. For this reason it is THE starting point for the uninitiated. It is important to note, however, that it cannot be more than it's title suggests: an introduction. It does not deal with the criticisms of Marx's theory of value in any depth. Also, it reveals not only its age, and how times have changed by what is emphasises AND what it ignores. In the case of what it emphasises: much is made of the importance of the cold war as a necessary phenomenon. In the case of what it ignores: it understandably says nothing of post-Fordism, ecological concerns, or the emergence of non-socialist oppositional 'social movements' (such as feminism, environmentalism and multiculturalism). These criticisms are hardly relevant to a book such as this: its central goal is to outline the essential message in Marx's 'Das Kapital', and to show (in ch.3) how this message can be applied (with some inevitable modification) to explain (then) current politico-economic events.

INTRODUCTION

Since World War II no branch of science has contributed more to the development of the modern world as electronics. It has stimulated dramatic advances in the fields of communication, computing, consumer products, industrial automation, test and measurement, and health care. It has now become the largest single industry in the world, exceeding the automobile and oil industries, with annual sales of electronic systems greater than $2 trillion. One of the most important trends in this huge industry has been a gradual shift from analog electronics to digital electronics. This movement began in the 1960s and is almost complete today. In fact, a recent statistic stated that, on average, 90% of the circuitry within electronic systems is now digital, and only 10% is analog. This digitalization of the electronics industry is merging sectors that were once separate. For example, two of the largest sectors or branches of electronics are computing and communications. Being able to communicate with each other using the common language of digital has enabled computers and communications to interlink, so that computers can now function within communication-based networks, and communications networks can now function through computer-based systems. Industry experts call this merging convergence and predict that digital electronics will continue to unite the industry and stimulate progress in practically every field of human endeavor.

Well thought out and applicable introduction... Great Refresher.

I spent a long time looking for a resource like this. As someone who clearly did not pay enough attention in high school or college and someone who then rarely used mathematics I find this book a great refresher. It is easy to understand with some of the best explanations I've ever seen of the principles behind why algebraic expressions are the way they are. Recently I have been trying to learn to program (verses learn a programming language) and realized that in even some of the more basic introductions there were many things assumed about my mathematical knowledge that sadly did not hold true for me. While I knew there was an order of operations I could not have told you what it was or why. And when they began to talk about algorithms I became completely lost. But this book walked me back through much of this and I am now able to move forward again. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a practical and applicable knowledge of basic mathematics.

Introduction to Computer Mathematics!?

I got this book as an assistant for programming and additional mathematics. The book is written more like an introduction to mathematics. It starts with basic fractions, multiplication, and exponents. It briefly covers advanced algebraic expressions and trig. Though the good side of it is that it covers logic gates pretty good. I would suggest buying a series of books instead of one brief one. Whether you are going into computer science or information technology, get something more in depth.

Great computer math book

I am going back to school to get a degree and this is one of the books that I had to get. Math is not my strong subject but I find this book easy to grasp. The book is computer mathematics so there are things you will learn that are not in a normal math book, like Ohm's Law. I have to admit that when there is something I need a little extra help with I go to the Khan site. The book was a steal on Amazon, I bought it used and there is NO damage or writing of any kind. I am glad I can come to Amazon for all my books.

Throughout the '80s and '90s, as the Morris Agency made, and lost, such stars as Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Kevin Costner and Tom Hanks, Ovitz's power grew inexorably as Morris's waned. The growth of the William Morris Agency, founded in 1898, has mirrored the evolution of the entertainment industry. The agency began by booking vaudeville acts, then continued to supply talent to the ever-changing show biz formats?silent movies, radio, "talkies" and TV. And as entertainment become more of a big business, the power of the Morris Agency grew along with it. Rose's descriptions of the formative years of the agency and show business is slow-moving, but his narrative picks up as he details the era of Abe Lastfogel, who headed Morris from the early 1930s to 1969. Rose (West of Eden) really hits his stride in the last third of the book, when his focus shifts from the stars to the Morris agents themselves. Here he vividly describes the Machiavellian tactics employed by the firm's agents against other agencies and against each other to steal clients to advance their own power. Infighting among the Morris agents became public in 1975 when Michael Ovitz and four others bolted to form Creative Artists Agency. Entertainment-industry junkies will find Rose's entire work enjoyable, but more casual readers will likely skim the early sections. Photos not seen by PW.

This would be a fascinating enough story if it was limited to the history of the William Morris Agency, the theatrical agency that has dominated the entertainment industry since the days of vaudeville. But you can't tell the William Morris story without immersing yourself in the history of show business in the twentieth century--how it evolved, who the movers and shakers were, where the business might be heading as the century draws to a close. Rose's exhaustive research is evident throughout. More than 200 sources were used, and while these personal remembrances are what gives the book its depth, the numerous anecdotes also occasionally weigh it down. Not that there's anything very dishy here. One would expect that a story featuring a cast of characters like Marilyn Monroe, Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra, and Bill Cosby, to name a few, would have a few tales to tell, but Rose sticks pretty much to the business side of their lives. The real stars here are the agents themselves. For once, the backstage boys get to step center stage, and it's power and influence that give them their glow. Ilene Cooper

Terrrific book

Frank Rose's book really delivers a fascinating history of William Morris. It's not about the stars as much as the men (and women) who helped make the stars -- the "star-making machinery" as Joni Mitchell sang in "Free Man in Paris," her ode to David Geffen, himself one of the William Morris men who, incidentally, became a star himself. The Agency is substantial stuff -- and it was a full on inspiration for my own book, The Mailroom, which came later, and covered the Wm Morris Agency in part. Classic stuff, this book.

Tedious History of Agency Filled With Names But Little Else

After seeing this book referenced in a couple Hollywood biographies, I expected to have a book filled with interesting insider stories of the movie and TV business. Instead this lengthy historical project is filled with page after page of unfamiliar names of agents and the stars are only peripheral to the story.

The main problem is that the author tries to cover too much territory--explaining almost 100 years of the William Morris agency. The beginning years of vaudeville could have been covered in a few paragraphs instead of 50 pages. The minute details of insignificant agents should have been left out and instead the focus could have been on the Hollywood stars served by the agents.

There are a few interesting tidbits, but rarely is any detail given to any subject. The early years of television include some often unheard facts about how stars were drawn to the tube. But major events in the business get a paragraph or two. Most of it is based on second-hand research from others books, which results in a number of mistakes by omission or "facts" taken out of context.

At almost 500 pages, it's a long, tedious bore that will only be of interest to entertainment historians. It's not for those looking for an entertaining read filled with insights into how Hollywood works.
