Great overview for diabetic foot/wound exam and care

This is a handbook which should be in the library of every primary care doc, wound care nurse, podiatrist, and even educated diabetic patients who want to learn about their foot health.

The chapters read fast but have many clinical photos and great highlights for learning about diabetic wound prevention, diagnosis, basic wound care, diabetic vascular evaluation, and many other diabetic foot issues. The authors are well published experts who formed an all star team of endocrinologists, internal medicine specialists, podiatric surgeons, and vascular specialists, and allied health professionals and worked together to make this American Diabetes Association book. Great public health info!

Excelent and concise review.Comprehensive how to guidelines for evaluation,risk determination and treatment including frequency for re-evaluation.How much weight factors such as obesity,glycemic control,smoking, foot hygiene,and propensity to walk barefoot inside and outdoors are not used to increase the risk score.The authors should use their vast experience to add several or all of the above to modify the risk score.

About the Author

Michael Wertheimer is Professor Emeritus, Department of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Harvard University. A former president of four APA divisions (history of psychology, teaching of psychology, theoretical and philosophical psychology, and general psychology), he is the recipient of two national awards for the teaching of psychology, and in 2000 APA’s Division 26 presented him a "lifetime achievement award for sustained, outstanding, and unusual contributions to the history of psychology." Recently a member of the APA Board of Directors, he is co-editor of all seven volumes of the series Portraits of Pioneers in Psychology published by APA, LEA, and now Psychology Press.

Just as the title suggested, this provide a "brief" history of psychology. The reading is fairly easy but due to the limitation being placed due to the book being concise, there are some confusions that require background of the subject prior to reading this book. I won't suggest this as a starter but rather a refresher for those who appreciate and wishes to re-enforce psychology in a historical content.

A Helpful Little Primer

Randy Alcorn tweeted a couple of days ago that his little booklet, Sexual Temptation: Establishing Guardrails and Winning the Battle, was available for free as a .pdf download.

It is, in all, just under 60 pages. As I read it yesterday, it struck me as a wonderful little primer on an important issue that I think could be read with great benefit by Sunday School classes, small groups, youth groups, etc. I think the brevity and simplicity of his approach may make this especially helpful for young people (though a few of the case studies he points to at the very beginning are quite intense, if still briefly presented).

Alcorn first offers some basic facts about sexual temptation:

We are targeted for sexual immorality.
We are vulnerable to sexual immorality.
We are fully responsible for our moral choices.
He then offers helpful suggestions and advice concerning cultivating our inner lives, guarding our minds, and taking precautions with the opposite sex. He warns against subtle signs of attraction and the various ways we rationalize immoral behavior. Furthermore, he gives sound advice on cultivating your marriage, on being honest with your spouse, on accountability, and on confession and repentance.

His section on counting the cost of sin was very well done. In it, he offers a partial list of the effects of being caught in sexual sin. It is a sobering list and one well worth heeding. He concludes on a positive note, encouraging the reader to victory in this vital and difficult area of life.

Again, this is quite a good little look at the issue of sexual temptation.

This book is short but on the point. It gives practical ways of fighting lust & pornography. I can recommend this book to anybody struggling with pornography.

I have this and other books by him, and this one really has a lot of good advice and hits home to one of the biggest issues we face.. sexual temptation. If you think this is a book just for men, you're wrong! Women face sexual temptations just like we men do, so it's a great book filled with awesome Biblical insight for ANY gender facing temptations!

Not even close to all you need to know.

This is an altogether poor how to draw book that leaves a lot to be desired. Its meager introduction only contains a very haphazard list of materials without specifications or descriptions, followed by the most unhelpful step-by-step layout I have ever seen on a how to draw book. On the left pages it has a full-page color drawing of one Justice League superhero with a short history of the character. On the opposite page there are four progressive drawings on graph paper on how to obtain that finished image, as in copying the same previously presented image and not being able to create your own. There are NO instructions on how to go from one step to the other, and NO discussion of guidelines on basic figure drawing, head and figure proportions, movements or expressions, comparisons of male and female figure features, or perspective and foreshortening for backgrounds and figures, all of them essential issues to any serious cartoonist. It also lacks instructions on compositional drawings, i.e., drawings showing two or more superheroes interacting with backgrounds.
This 32-page book also contains a 2-page presentation, a 1-page introduction, a 1-page conclusion, and 4 sheets (8 pages) of graph paper in the back, leaving you with only 20 pages (10 images) of superhero drawings, that is: 2 for Superman, 2 for Batman, 2 for Wonder Woman and one each for Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Flash and Hawkgirl.
I would recommend buying any of the three Ty Templeton books on cartooning the DC comics universe first: How to Draw Batman, How To Draw Superman or How to Draw Batman and Other DC Comics Superheroes, to get your money's worth of everything missing from this book. Or, if you are desperate to draw the Justice League like Bruce Timm, try downloading some images from the Internet and practice copying them on graph paper, you'll probably do just as well or a lot better than by buying this book.
This book is aimed for a 9 to 12 years-old audience, but even they will find the lack of instruction in this book frustrating, what it lacks in depth, it doesn't compensate in price or print quality.

Slightly dated, but still good info

I have been using LinkedIn for a few years so some of this is pretty well-known material. However, even the basic knowledge was a good refresher. Good for someone willing to create processes (and stick to them) and commit to this form of social media. Tips on optimizing profiles, connecting, staying current with prospects and more.

disappointing

I was fooled by all those 5 star reviews. When I had a better look - only one actually purchased the book.
The book is written in a very complicated style, and it's all about "me me me and me again". Book that sells more of Melonies courses, speaking and other services. Save your money and time. There are better books out there.

I was expecting more from this book. It is lacking detail in some areas in comparison to another book I purchased last year on the subject. This is one of those books that seems designed to sell consulting and training services as opposed to being a definitive and comprehensive information resource on the subject.

About the Author

Gerald Hiestand (MA, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is the senior associate pastor of Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, Illinois, and executive director of the Center for Pastor Theologians. He is the author of a number of scholarly papers and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Gerald lives in Oak Park, Illinois, with his wife, Jill, and their four children.

Jay Thomas (MDiv, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) serves as the lead pastor of Chapel Hill Bible Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was previously the college pastor at College Church in Wheaton, Illinois. Jay and his wife, Rebecca, have four children.

Surprisingly paradigm-changing; a surprisingly simple approach with surprisingly profound theology

I've now read multiple books on dating, and each of them has had its strengths*, but they all generally talked about similar things: biblical manhood and womanhood, and intentional relationships in consideration of marriage.

So when I picked up this book, I expected more of the same.

I was wrong.

I hadn't expected this book to say things that nobody else was saying.
I hadn't expected this book to become one of my anticipated favorites of the year.
It was far more paradigm-shifting (and brainy) than I expected it to be.
Also, the authors win points for proposing an approach to dating that's both simple and gutsy (that is, gutsy in terms of its counter-culture philosophy). See point 5 below for my summary of the authors' prescribed method of getting a wife.

This book's focus was much narrower than the other books: it wasn't trying to say everything there is to say about romantic relationships; it was mainly trying to change how we approach romantic relationships.

A few things I learned from this book:

1. We need to take the Bible's typology seriously, especially when it comes to Christ and the Church. We also need to take the image of God seriously.

Implication: Christ is faithful to His bride; are you faithful to yours? Do you want to get married just for your own gratification or also to live out the image of God?

2. The Bible addresses three types of human relationships: marriage (sexual relations commanded), family (sexual relations forbidden), and neighbor (sexual relations forbidden).

Implication #1: Dating is an activity, not a category. People nowadays treat "dating" as a fourth type of human relationship, but it's unwise to create a new category that Scripture doesn't address. A dating friendship is a subset of the neighbor category, not a new (fourth) category.

Implication #2: Since a dating friendship is a subset of the neighbor category, it has the same sexual ethics as the neighbor category (and as the family category). So would you have sex with your sister? If not, then you shouldn't have sex with your neighbor or the girl your dating. Similarly, would you romantically kiss your sister? If not, then you shouldn't romantically kiss the girl you're dating.

3. The security in a dating relationship is false; temporary-until-I-don't-feel-like-it commitment is no real commitment. There's no real security until engagement. Until then, the relationship itself constitutes no real commitment to exclusivity. (The parties can voluntarily choose exclusivity, but this is something self-imposed and not constrained by the relationship category.) In reality, a "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" can break off the relationship at any time without having violated any commitment.

Implication #1: Don't trust in the relationship beyond what real commitment there is. Don't set your heart up for heartbreak.

Implication #2: Dating need not be exclusive or committed. It can be, but you're not asking for exclusivity and commitment until you propose.

Implication #3: I ought not try to win a girl's heart until I know what I want to do with it. That is, I shouldn't romance her until I know I want to marry her. As Song of Solomon says, "Do not awaken love until it desires." (Conversely, a girl shouldn't give away her heart until she knows what the man intends to do with it.)

4. Your heart-theology controls your instinctive lust. The more you (really, in your heart, not just in your head) believe Christ's promises, the less your subconscious will want to lust.

5. You can apply all this rather simply in "dating friendships":
a. Date people, with no sex (including kissing), romance, or mandated commitment.
b. When you propose, turn on the romance and the commitment.
c. When you get married, turn on the sex!

*Josh Harris' Boy Meets Girl: Say Hello to Courtship was well-rounded and well-illustrated (and not as radical as some people might think...on a side note, I haven't read I Kissed Dating Goodbye, so I can't comment on that book);
John Ensor's Doing Things Right in Matters of the Heart was a pleasure to read because it was so passionate and poetic; and
Alex & Marni Chediak's With One Voice: Singleness, Dating & Marriage to the Glory of God was analytical and the most like a procedural manual, and it argued that marriage is normative.

(Actually, I really enjoyed all three, and you might not be able to tell, but With One Voice might have been the most formative for me. But, to be honest, John Ensor's book was the most fun to read, on an emotional, aesthetic level.)

Christ-Centered, Bible-Driven Purity

The moment I finished reading this book, I started reading it again. These Pastors have been used well by God to reveal radical, yet simple, truths. My mind was changed, and I knew I would want to be able to share this wisdom with others, so I am happily rereading to be able to do so.

So often we Christians are told to "guard our hearts". Whenever I heard that phrase in the past, I always thought of it as guarding my heart FROM something, not guarding it FOR something. That is exactly the kind of thinking this book causes. Rather than focusing on the negatives of premarital sexual behavior and using fear of heartbreak to motivate readers to seek purity, they remind us about the importance and beauty of sex in God's design. So we are not told to guard our hearts for our protection, or even our benefit really, but to guard our hearts for God, because of God.

Please read this book. It is my belief that by reading this book you will have lost nothing and gained much. It has caused me to strive for purity in entirely new ways, and for entirely new reasons. Yes, I want to honor God, but now I want to honor Him with my whole heart and not just my actions.

A biblical approach to pre-marriage relationships

One reviewer of this book said it was "Surprisingly paradigm-changing" and I couldn't agree more. I'm not the kind of guy who just can't wait for the next dating book to come out...most of them are kind of cheesy for my liking. More than that they all seem to be based off of an "I think" foundation that gives little solid ground for anyone to stand on. This shaky ground of subjectivity on the subject of Christian pre-marriage relationships has left the youth of the church, well the adults too actually, with a convoluted message of holiness within a pre-marriage relationship. The reason why this "dating" book is so good is because it's not primarily about dating...which the bible kinda never really talks about. It's a book on purity, holiness, marriage and ultimately the gospel. I left the book desiring holiness more than before I read it, and I left the book more in love with the gospel and the God who gave it more than before I read it. I love this book for many of the same reasons I love the bible: it challenged me, it encouraged me, and it equipped me. I couldn't recommend this book more. Please buy it and please read it.
